David:Boy vs Man

Over the years, many people have painted and sculpted various stories from the Bible. One of the most intriguing sculpture comparisons is that of the statues of David by Donatello and Michealangelo. Shown as just a young boy, Donatello captures David's innocense in an almost feminine way. A battle hat atop his head could be a Sunday church hat if only flowers were added. His smooth skin and long hair only compliment his feminine stance with hand upon hip. He proudly wears a grin as if to say "look what I've done." He has no muscle definition to insinuate masculinity. Goliath appears still to be laughing at the site of his conquerer, who now has his head under foot.

Michealangelo later portrays a much older more defined David. In this sculpture, David has much detail of muscle definition and strength. David,s eyes show an intense knowledge and forthrightness. His brow is furrowed as if deep in thought or disapproving. His head is held high in confidence. To add to his strong facial features, Michealangelo continues this detail and definition right down to David's hands which show thick veins of hard work and success. Casually he drapes a cloth over his shoulder, yet stands comfortably at ease in nudity.

The intensity of Michealangelo's David grabs my interests much more than Donatello's. To be truthful, the Donatello version creeps me out a bit. It reminds me of a perverse rendition of a young boy in battle. I am however amazed at the detail and time it had to have taken each artist to create such masterpieces.

  1. I disagree that Donatellos David is that of a young boy. The modern viewer must take into consideration the fact that people aged much slower back then. We didn't have have hormones in our food sources so long ago. Even two generations ago people aged much slower. This has been documented time and time again. Take for instance the age a girl typically starts menstruating in 2011 versus how old a girl started two generations back. The statue is more like a older teenager or a male in his twenties. Although Donatellos David has very little muscle definition, he is by no means anorexic. The David by Michealangelo, on the other hand, certainly has far greater muscle definition. Michealangelos David was depicted as an older version compared to Donatellos.
